We have been exploring and celebrating Black History Month with lots more still to discover. Here is what we have been learning so far…
What is Black History Month?
Black History Month is celebrated all over the world and can be seen celebrated in schools, universities, libraries, museums and lots of other places. People will learn about important Black people and what impact their work had on society then and now.
Black History Month was first celebrated in the UK in the 1980’s. It is celebrated every year during the month of October. It is a chance for us all to celebrate and deepen our understanding of the achievements of Black people past and present.
Why do we celebrate Black History Month?
Black people have been an important part of society for a very long time. There are many Black people who have achieved great, important things but sadly, haven’t been celebrated or mentioned in history books, history lessons, TV shows or news. Because of this, lots of us don’t know about these amazing achievements. So, we celebrate Black History Month so that we can learn about these special people and their achievements.
Racism
When someone isn’t treated fairly, or subject to unkind behaviour, because of the colour of their skin, this is called racism.
How did Black History Month start?
Carter G Woodson, born in the USA, noticed that Black people were rarely mentioned in history books. Woodson wanted to change this so announced the first ever Black History Month in 1926. He became known as the ‘Father of Black History.’
Who have we been learning about?
So far we have been learning about the following Black people; Olaudah Equiano, Harriet Tubman, Louis Armstrong, Usain Bolt, Nelson Mandela, Mary Seacole and Marcus Rashford. There are so many more inspiring people for us to learn about too, who will you find out about?
